Malcolm Evans is 32 and lives in Coventry with his wife (Jane) and three children (Rowan(5) Martha (3) and Flora (9 months)). He’s a singer/songwriter, worship leader and folk/acoustic club singer. 2002-2003 Facts:
In May 2002 I had my first festival appearance at Firm Foundations, which was great fun.
In November 2002 I had a short set at the Banbury Folk Festival.
This year has been busy so far! In January I organised ‘Acoustic Amnesty’ – an evening of acoustic music in aid of Amnesty International. It was a brilliant night of music provided by, Ruth Roberts, Chris Tobin and myself, with a surprise appearance from Sean Cannon (The Dubliners). I’m constantly being asked: “When’s the next one?”
That same week, my Rugby Airport protest song made the Coventry newspapers and I sang it on Radio WM. I’ve since had an offer of free studio time to record a full band version of ‘NIMBY’, which I’ve agreed to do!
Since then I’ve started to host some Friday evenings at The Runway at Boggery HQ, which is great fun!
Later in the year I’m due to play a few festivals (so far):
· Firm Foundations – May 2003
· Leamington Peace Festival (tbc)
· Grassrootz – July 2003 (I had to do a live audition in Tunbridge Wells for this one last November).
I’ve also got my first studio CD out, which I recorded at the Blue Whale Studios (Custard Factory, Birmingham) in January and February:
‘Dream’ is a ‘snapshot’ of songs I’ve written and sung in a variety of places over the past year. There are protest songs, a song about the derailment of The Flying Scotsman in 1926 at the station in Cramlington (the town where I grew up), songs that have been used at church and at festivals, songs that have been sung in pubs and clubs.
A proportion of the proceeds made from the sale of the CD will be going to Saint Cecilia’s School, Rosses Point, Co. Sligo. They’ve adopted ‘Dream’ as their assembly song. I went to see them last November and had an enjoyable day making music, new friends and learning about this special needs school.
One of my ambition is to play a gig with Martyn Joseph. If I could just make it to Greenbelt…
