The first Roadshow of the year fulfilled a long-held ambition of mine to visit City Gates Church. Based in the heart of the West End in Central London, the church meets in the famous Comedy Store venue. Having worked in a couple of London theatres many years ago, I have always had a heart and vision for the West End, and especially the entertainment business, having also been involved through the years with Christians in Entertainment. So, to visit this church, which has a great reputation for providing a radical, relevant christian presence in the centre of London was a real thrill.

The church comprises mainly young professionals, students, families and international visitors and residents, and with upwards of 250 adults attending on a Sunday morning, the 30 or so children in the church are a relatively small number, but are a vital and vibrant part of the church community.

Kelly, who heads up the children’s work is doing a great job there. Having worked with her on Popcorn a few years back, we know how fortunate the church is to have her in that role. Matt Frost who leads the church has been a real inspiration and challenge to me over the years when I’ve heard him speak, so it was brilliant to see him on his home patch, and catch a glimpse of the significance and potential of the church in such a strategic location.

The band lineup was a brand new one for a new year, and making Roadshow debuts were Nick Quanrud on bass and Neil Barnes on keys. Dave Fordham played electric guitar, with Sophie singing and Josie dancing. With the addition of drums, this lineup has the potential to be a great full band for future Roadshows.

As well as some Roadshow standards, we tried a new song, “Speak, Lord”, based on Samuel in the temple when Eli tells him it’s God who wants to speak to him. We’re hoping to demo that soon for a possible recording later in the year.

Check out some photos from the Roadshow here.
